Meet Margaret Nyland: Eclectic Actress
EXCERPT FROM MARK LEON'S REVIEW IN CHARLESTON DAILY...
"Margaret Nyland transformed the role of Lula into an aging Southern debutante….Her attachment to Edna St. Vincent Millay signal her body may have aged, but her inner beauty remains."
Some people become fascinated by acting as a child. For others, it takes a move or change of scenery to finally seize opportunities as an adult. For Margaret Nyland, it started while she was in college at UVA.
Despite being a Russian Studies major, Margaret found time to take theatre classes and be involved in college productions. She eventually went onto law school and even practiced law in Washington, D.C., but not before working as a producer an ABC TV affiliate.
Ms. Nyland was married after college and is now divorced. She and her family moved back to Charleston from D.C. in 2009. She soon hit the local arts scene, and hasn't looked back. She had raised three children (Luke, Monica, and Gillian), but now she feels she's being educated in a whole new way through the world of theatre.
Margaret graces our stage currently in the Actors' Theatre of South Carolina's The Dayporch as Lula. She likes that Lula has a great combination of fragility, sensuality, and strength. She also says most of all, she loves "Lula's love of poetry and how she lives through it". Margaret's strength and love of life make her highly valuable in The Dayporch.
Ms. Nyland is no stranger to Threshold Repertory Theatre, having been seen in Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, 1963, and The Exonerated (with Midtown Productions). She's also been seen in productions at The College of Charleston, Footlight Players, and Pure Theatre.
Margaret is a very passionate person. She is enchanted by her three children, practices yoga daily, and is able to transform herself into characters from all walks of life. She has said she "strives to be honest in the moment under imaginary circumstances".
